In the United States, Activision Blizzard and UMG participate in the environmental initiatives undertaken by mass retailer Wal-Mart and Best Buy, a company specializing in consumer-electronics sales.

In July 2009, Wal-Mart launched an evaluation and rating system called “Sustainability Index” for all the products sold in their stores to enable consumers to compare products and help them better understand the social and environmental impact of the products they buy. Wal-Mart distributed to their 100,000 suppliers a 15-point questionnaire for evaluating their sustainable development policy. The questions have to do with four main areas: energy and environment; performance of materials; natural resources; people and the community. Suppliers described the environmental footprint of their products in terms of the quantity of greenhouse gases emitted.

Best Buy has set up a system of electronic document sharing with their suppliers and is committed to increasing the use of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper, including for their cardboard product packaging.
