Universal Music Group has garnered further recognition through the many cultural and artistic distinctions won by its artists in several countries.
In the United States, the 51st Grammy Awards in February 2009 honored many UMG artists, allowing them to win a total of 40 trophies. Juanes won the award for Best Latin Pop Album, George Strait took home the prize for Best Country Album, and Raising Sand, by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, was chosen as Album of the Year.
In the UK, eight prizes were awarded to UMG artists, and among them was Duffy, who won three.
In Germany, at the Echo Awards in February 2009, UMG artists won nine awards including the prestigious Best International Newcomer prize, which went to the British artist Amy Mac Donald.
In France, nine of the 14 Victoires de la Musique 2009 awards went to artists under contract with Universal Music: Alain Bashung with three (Best Male Artist, Best Album, and Best Live Show); Thomas Dutronc (Best Song); Abd Al Malik (Best Urban-Music Album); Rokia Traoré (Best World Music Album).
